Zoom uses a technology called WebRTC – Web “Real Time Communications”. Very simply put, when two people are having a conversation on Zoom – the browsers are talking DIRECTLY to each other: no encode, decode, player or anything. This also limits the number of people that can be on the call (I think 100 is about tops). You can take and WEBCAST a zoom session, and the people talking in the zoom session will be in sync with each other, but the webcast itself will be almost 60 seconds behind the real time events for people WATCHING the webcast.
This is how Wirecast handles live interviews: it has it’s own version of Zoom called Rendezvous INSIDE the webcasting / video mixing software. So this is WebRTC operating within a webcasting / video mixing program.
If you want to set up a “remote studio” here’s how that would work – Remote studio & Webcast studio.
Remote Studio: Setup Wirecast so all your audio / video is coming into Wirecast, then use “virtual camera out” to hook into the Rendezvous session or route directly to the Rendezvous internal application (not sure how this connects) – become a live source on the Webcast location Rendezvous application. Second: set up another real time channel to use for off-air communications between the two locations – “watching” the feed in a browser won’t work because of time lag. This might be tricky unless you use multiple laptops as Rendezvous wants to “take over” your webcam.
Webcast Studio: Mix the Rendezvous feed from the Remote studio with your location camera & audio mix. This should be fairly straightforward, though I have never actually done this – remember: you’ll be mixing location cameras, graphics, audio, clips & commercial insertion while switching back and forth between those items and a remote feed. It might take some practice.
